Frequently Asked Questions
Is SHG Services a securities data provider?
- With the exception of custom classification schemes,
we are not a securities data provider. We utilize
data either from your existing data providers or from
new data providers that we help you set up agreements
with.
- In the case of custom classification schemes we
use our internal algorithms and third party data to
assign a custom classification to securities, thus
generating "new" data.
Does the SMS service resell/redistribute data?
- No, we neither resell nor do we redistribute data.
All data that comes from us to you is data that you
have a license agreement with a specific data vendor
for. We may cache it, store it, or otherwise manipulate
it on your behalf, but its origination is through
a legal agreement you have, or will have with a data
vendor.
What data sources does the SMS use?
- The SMS uses a variety of data vendors, carefully
selected based on your data needs and requirements.
We will help you determine your data needs, the available
sources and help you acquire the correct vendors.
- Not all data is proprietary or need come from a
data vendor. In some instances, data fields that can
be obtained via the public domain are included as
a part of the service, when the effort/cost to acquire
them, on a daily basis, is less than the cost of purchasing
them from a third party source.
Is the SMS affiliated with a particular data provider?
- No, we are not affiliated with any particular vendor
or provider. We utilize many data providers on behalf
of our clients for their licensed usage. When we analyze
your data needs we will provide you with alternatives
to choose from, where available, along with the Pro's
and Con's of each option. You may then choose your
own set of providers and we will work with them.
Who owns the agreement with the vendor and who is
responsible for following the terms of the agreement?
- You do, and you are. They are your agreements and
you are required to abide by the terms of those agreements.
We simply act as your agent in working with the data
and/or data provider. No different than a consultant
working on your behalf.
If we have existing relationships and are satisfied
with the data we get from them, can we continue to use
them?
- In almost all cases. The only exception being if
the nature of the feed/connection to the data
provider
is highly nonstandard or inordinately complex/manual.
In these cases we, the SMS, may need to adjust the
delivery mechanisms or charge a higher fee.
What mechanisms are available to access the SMS?
- Most automated systems are batch oriented and prefer
the use of ftp file transmission. These files can
be text oriented or Excel based. In either case the
input and output formats are to your specification.
- We also support file/data submission via the web
and interactive use of the database via the web.
- We also support web services style querying. (E.g.
Excel Web Query).
What are the costs involved?
- The largest cost is the cost of the data from the
data providers. These costs vary by provider and by
the type, nature and use of the data supplied.
- There is an initial consulting/analysis and setup
fee that is based on time and expense billing.
- There is a fixed ongoing monthly fee that is based
on the exact dataset returned/services required, volume
of new securities and level of research required.
